Hello Autumn!!! This early run of Autumn-like weather is wonderful, but is there a price to pay? Are we going to have a Hot Indian Summer or maybe a bitter cold Winter? Who's to say? I would be okay with a continuation of mild temperatures and limited precipitation. I have started back to school that is why I have been behind on my blog lately. What an exciting change and challenge! For anyone out there contemplating furthering their education, DO IT! It has to be the most rewarding endeavor!

No Fire Here... Battery Operated Candle have to be one of our all-time biggest sellers. Not only are they a safe alternative to real candles, they are fantastic in arrangements where real candles would not even burn. i.e. I love creating displays showcasing battery candles inside of large apothecary jars or under a glass cloche. The candles I am featuring here are by-far my favorites and are, in my opinion, the best on the market!

Water, Water Everywhere!!! I am sorry I have not been posting lately. We had water back-up in our basement of 10" +. Yikes! We had 3,000 Sq. Ft. of mess! I did not think we would ever get everything out. After 16 truckloads of damaged inventory taken to the dump, I was far past being heartsick...I just wanted to get the job done. After 2 weeks, we finally did. Thank you so much to Brenda, Brian and Roxy for all of your help!

We are making more changes at Willow Brook! Our Ice Cream/Espresso Shop, Snow Ball, is growing in leaps and bounds, therefore, we are needing to expand for more seating. Consequently, we are having to sacrifice some of our showroom space for Willow Brook to accommodate. But don't fret... we will still have the great selection, we just have to get a little more creative on how to display it so it will all fit! We are planning on being completed with this project by mid-summer. Wish us luck!

EASTER TRADITIONS...

Even at 31 years old, coloring eggs for Easter is a must. For some reason, they always taste better with a bit of dye that has seeped through the shells. We always seem to boil way too many and the one's that survive the Easter Feast get chopped up to be used in Mom's Infamous Macaroni Salad. Some traditions should never be broken. Happy Easter!

Self-Growth...

This is a Twin-Composition I created in my 2-D Design class at Missouri Western State University last Spring. The top piece symbolizes the beginning of my life and my two older brothers already filling the nest. The lower piece is symbolic of where I am now... visually mature, but with a lot of growing left to do. I have revisited these pieces again as I begin to plan for my new growth. This coming Fall Semester, I am returning to MWSU as a full-time student to pursue a bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in Graphic Design. My plans are to utilize my new knowledge not only to help me grow, but to also help in the growth of Willow Brook. There are no regrets in the continuance of education... it is always time well spent.

Creating "Haunted Atchison, Kansas" Pillows... I have been working non-stop on my days off trying to meet the overwhelming demand for my "Haunted Atchison, Kansas" Pillows. You know, Atchison IS the most haunted town in Kansas. In fact, I have a few stories of my own... One evening in the latter part of October, 2002... Keegan (age 2), the son of Albert Valdez (Owner of Snow Ball Ice Cream Shoppe), went to use the restroom. He came running back to the front of the store to get me. "Brett !!! Brett !!! There is someone in the bathroom!", he exclaimed in his childish gibber. "No there isn't", I replied. "Let me take you, and I will show you." Turning on the light in the bathroom, I said, "See, there is no one in here". "Yes there was", Keegan insisted. "Was it a boy or a girl", I asked "A girl"..."Was it a little girl or a big girl?"..."A big girl". "Okay, where did she go?" "In there", he said as he pointed at an old corner cabinet that was given to me by a friend. What do you think? Ghost? This is just one of many mysterious stories I could tell you about the happenings in my store over the past 7+ years.

Fall Open House is upon us. The store is slowly starting to come together. As usual, I have had priceless, endless volunteer hours donated by some of my dearest friends. Hours upon hours of opening boxes, peeling tags, pricing and the ever so irritating...Styrofoam peanuts! Every Open House I worry myself with silly details like... what if I didn't order the right merchandise...or...what if no one comes...or...what if I do not have enough selection. Ridiculous thoughts whirl round and round in my head until I have to stop and refocus on the reality. The store is really starting to look festive and a little spooky. I have stocked an incredible quantity of bittersweet wreaths, garlands and picks. Bittersweet and pumpkins are probably the biggest autumn-time staples. I can't wait to open the doors tomorrow night at 5pm and greet all my customers that are also my friends. Thank you to all of you!

SOMETHING OUT OF NOTHING

I constructed this wonderful wall shelf out of an old, curved drawer I had stashed away in my garage. I reinforced the bottom, added some architectural elements to the top, sanded, finished and voila! I love the height inside to display taller items. I am beginning to part with some of my collection of goodies I've been hording for sometime, so you will begin seeing a lot more one-of-a-kind items like this is my store. I hope this inspires you to look at items, you may have, in a different light.

Spring Decorating Tip

Bird nests are a fantastic way to give the feeling of bringing the outdoors in. Showcase your favorite nest on a small urn for a new twist. To add more elegance, layer the top of a cake stand with sheet moss, place your urn with the nest in the center and cover with a glass cloche. This will bring attention to a natural piece of art that otherwise, may be overlooked.

Other Tips:

1. If you choose to use a "real" nest, be sure to place in the freezer in a sealed plastic bag for at least a week. This will take care of any bugs that may have made that nest a home too.

2. If you do not have a cake stand but you do have an urn, you can put a salad or dinner plate of similar color on top of an urn to create your own cake stand.

Also, turn a clear, glass goblet upside down and adhere a clear, glass plate on top. This makes a wonderful cake stand for candles and is a great way to use up odd dishes.
